4 Ways To Improve Your Oral Health While You Sleep

When you sleep, your mouth is not free of the impact of decay and other problems.  There is a lot that is going on in your mouth when you’re resting, but you don’t have to wait until morning to try and minimize the damage done. Here are four tips from Dr. JudyStrutz that you can do at bedtime to protect your smile.

1.     The number one way to protect against bacteria and other problems with your smile is to brush before bed. If you have implants, a bridge or veneers it is very important that you brush before bed. Just because you have dental appliances doesn’t mean you are free from decay.
2.     Floss your teeth at bedtime. Any food you had for dinner can stick between the teeth if you do not take the time to floss.
3.     If you grind your teeth, get a device to help. There are multiple options for mouth guards these days and Dr. Strutz recommends you get a mouth guard that is custom fitted to your smile.
4.     Do not eat sweets right before bed. The extra sugar in your sweet treat can cause major problems for your smile. Don’t snack on sweets right before you are going to sleep, instead have a glass of water.

Sleep Apnea During The Holidays

Don’t let sleep apnea hold you back from visiting family or staying where ever you want to go. You may be embarrassed because you know you snore loudly, or you don’t want to travel with all the necessary supplies for your breathing machine. There are current options that may change this traveling dilemma for you.
Sleep apnea is caused when, during sleep, your tongue blocks your airway when you lay down reducing your ability to breathe normally. During your sleep pattern, you may wake up several times a night in order to get air to your lungs. This can be dangerous if your brain does not get the oxygen it needs.
While it seems out of place that you would call and set up a consultation with your prosthodontist, this is exactly what you need to do. Dr. Judy Strutz and her team are available to complete a consultation with you. During this time, they will evaluate the shape of the roof of your mouth and discuss other problems or symptoms you may be experiencing from sleep apnea.
Once the consultation is over, you and Dr. Strutz will work together to create a plan to provide support to you. This may include a removable dental device that widens the pallet of the mouth. By having the pallet of the mouth widened, she may be able to prevent the blockage from your tongue when you are sleeping.

Don’t spend one more Holiday by yourself embarrassed about your sleep apnea.

Sleep Is Critical

Sleep is the critical component that restarts your body and mind. Without restorative and restful sleep, your body can slowly begin to break down and not work as well as it should. Here are 4 tips from Dr. JudithStrutz to help decrease the impact of sleep apnea.

1.     Avoid caffeine before bed. Drinking coffee, caffeinated tea or soda can decrease your body’s ability to shut down and sleep. Dr. Strutz says, “Caffeine enters the body through the bloodstream very quickly and can leave your body feeling the effects long after bedtime.”

2.     Stop watching television at least a half-hour prior to bedtime. T.V. helps keep the mind moving forward and processing images that we saw on the screen. It becomes a stimulate similar to caffeine. Reading a book, or listening to calming music instead can help you drift off to a restful sleep.

3.     Reduce food with high level of sugar in it prior to sleeping. Similar to caffeine large amounts of sugar can stimulate the body and keep you awake. “The sugar enters the blood stream and then increases hormones,” says Dr. Judy Strutz.

4.     Get help you if you have sleep apnea. A dental mouth guard can help open up the airway in order to prevent your airway from closing at night. The snore guard is fitted perfectly to your mouth and should be comfortable to wear.
