Knowledge Isn't Enough; Have You Eaten Fruits Today?

Last week, we focused on a few things you could do to add more water to your diet to enhance your smile. Welcome to our 8 part series on Knowledge isn't enough. This is our 4th part, and today we are blogging about fruit. Now you may be asking yourself, what does fruit have to do with your teeth?

Well, the fruit is an excellent source of vitamin C, which is great for your smile, but the extra water in there helps to rinse off food residue from food that is high in carbohydrates or remove food that might be stuck on your teeth from other food you consumed. So, this begs the question of how do you eat more fruit?

  1. Be realistic. If eating an apple a day doesn't make you smile, pick a different fruit. With a wide variety out available, choose ones that are going to make you smile. You want to stay away from fruit high in acid or thicker textures like bananas. But otherwise, the fruit market is open to you.
  2. Eat them at a time of day that works for you. We have talked about this a few times in our other series, but you want to stay away from setting yourself up for failure. If you get home from work tired, and the last thing on your mind is what you will eat, avoid putting that into your daily habit.
  3. Make it easy. Cut them up into slices and put them at the front of your fridge in baggies that you can grab on your way out the door. Or put them on the counter by your keys and cell phone the night before.
  4. Set a calendar reminder. We use our calendar reminders for other things; why not this. And attach a photo of your healthy smile eating fruit. It'll put your why at the front of your mind.

Take Care of Your Smile

The holidays are here, and you might be tempted to dive into the sweets or mash potatoes however, these 5 foods are healthier for your smile and will do it some good this holiday.

  1. Fruits. Fruits have a high concentration of water. This can help to remove things from the surface of your teeth and keep them from building up on the gum line.
  2. Drink plain water and avoid other drinks such as coffee, tea, soda, and high sugar drinks. Each of these poses a different problem for the health of your smile.
  3. Load up on the veggies. Vegetables have a high concentration in water as well. They are a great way to remove build-up for example, if you have just consumed something with sugar in it, the water can reduce any food on the surface of your smile.
  4. Cheese. Cheese contains a product called casein. It is a protein that helps to strengthen your teeth enamel. The stronger your tooth enamel the better able it is to fight against other problems that may arise.

Protect Your Smile This Summer

Now that summer is right around the corner and the weather is warming up it might be easy to reach for that high sugar fruit drink or ice cream instead of water. Avoid this pitfall and instead drink fruit flavored water and keep your smile healthy.  High fructose drinks not only can cause problems with cavities and other dental problems, but can also cause your mouth to dry out.  Dry mouth is an open opportunity for bacteria to get out of control and attack your tooth enamel.

Water with fruit in it not only gives you a refreshing drink to quench your thirst, but it can also provide a snack that is low in sugar and carbohydrates which can also impact your smile. Once you are feeling the impact of dry mouth, it is easy to reach for the closest and easiest drink at your fingertips. Avoid this problem by planning head.

Using a refillable water bottle can ensure that you are never far from the water you need to consume. Depending on your weight, where you live and how active you are will determine the amount of water you should be consuming.
