3 Reasons Why Lip Tie Procedures Are Hard To Diagnose

Lip tie procedures used to be completed by a midwife as soon as the baby was born. The midwife would use a long pinky nail to cut and separate the frenum from the lip. Now days updated laser technology allows the procedure to be completed relatively quickly and with minimal pain. Even though there are better techniques, thousands of parents and their babies suffer for months before someone realizes the problem.

Here are 3 reasons why Lip Ties are hard to diagnose in babies.

1.     Lip tie problems are difficult to diagnose because there are a variety of variations of lip tie. Sometimes the frenum is very thick and other times it is thinner, but still causing a problem for your baby to latch on when breastfeeding.
2.     When your baby first begins to have a problem breastfeeding it may be the last thing you or a doctor looks for. Thus assuming your baby’s problem when latching on to eat is caused by an improper breastfeeding technique or because you are stressed, rather then because of a lip tie.
3.     Most babies are born with some degree of lip tie, but it may not be clear right away how that is going to impact you and your baby until you begin to breastfeed.

While it may be the last thing someone looks at, if you are having trouble breastfeeding rule out a lip tie first. Contact Dr. Judy Strutz and her team for more information on what to look for when determining if your baby needs a laser procedure for lip tie.

You Are Worth It!

You give time to your family, time to your friends, clean up after the kids,  and get coffee with a friend. In the end of all this may lead you feeling tired, run down, and you may not have time for yourself.  But it is important for you to take care of yourself and your smile. Here are 3 tips, from Dr. Judy Strutz, that you can follow through with to keep your smile in great shape.

1.     Oil pulling. Complete oil pulling first thing in the morning when you wake up. Utilize coconut or sunflower oil in order to remove food particles from between the teeth. Don’t swallow any of the oil, but just swish back and forth for about twenty minutes.

2.     Fix broken teeth. While a broken tooth may not seem like a big deal it can impact your smile and your other teeth! One broken tooth can lead to wearing down other teeth, causing pain and other dental problems.

3.     Visit the prosthodontist if you have jaw trouble. Don’t let problems and pain continue as many times it can easily and affordably be corrected. Jaw pain could mean your bite is off, which can then cause you to break teeth as you bite down to consume some of your favorite foods.

Don’t waste time with a smile you don’t love. You are worth the smile that will last you a lifetime.

Four Tips to Managing Halitosis

Everyone is impacted by bad breath from time to time, but it doesn’t mean you have to live with it forever. Follow these simple steps to reducing the problem of bad breath and don’t wait for an embarrassing moment with a loved one to remind you that you need to take better care of your dental health. Halitosis can be caused not only by the food you eat but also because of bacteria in the mouth.

The first line of defense against halitosis is brushing and flossing regularly. If you can decrease your risk of periodontal disease, bacteria, and decay you drastically decrease your chance of bad breath. The only way to remove food from the teeth and gums is to brush and floss regularly.

If you have problems with decay, make sure to get those teeth taken care of right away. Decay left untreated not only can cause extreme pain, and expensive procedures, but it can also make the problem of your halitosis worse. Bacteria not dealt with creates halitosis.

Another way to reduce your bad breath is by drinking water. It increases the saliva production in the mouth. Increased saliva decreases smells and bacteria growth. “The more water you consume the less likely you will be impacted by dry mouth which contributes to bad breath,” says Dr. JudithStrutz.

For more information on how to combat halitosis, contact Dr. Strutz and her team today.

Two Potential Problems of Tongue-Tie

Some parents have found there is very little information on tongue-ties. They may have a baby that is fussy and struggling to latch on properly when breastfeeding. As a new mom, it can become overwhelming and frustrating, and you may feel it is your fault your baby cannot eat. At wits end you seek help and determine your baby is impacted with a tongue-tie. While you may be told to hold off on any procedures because it may 'fix itself', in order to give your baby the proper nutrition, you may have to provide other food sources. Dr. Strutz wants you to know there are risks to waiting to have a tongue-tie procedure and many times it solves the issues related to breastfeeding and much more.

Dr. Judith Strutz, says that some babies who do not get the procedure done relatively quickly after diagnosis may struggle to maintain proper weight. Without eating enough, they are not able to gain the necessary weight to stay healthy. Once the procedure is completed most babies are able to resume their normal eating habits and many breastfeed immediately after.

Then as your child gets older they may struggle to say certain sounds. The tongue in the mouth sits in a particular spot when saying particular sounds. When your child is saying the 's' or 't' sound if their tongue is not able to position itself correctly the sound may become more of a 'w.' While this may seem like a minor problem when they are younger, the older they get the more trouble they may experience with talking.

Sleep Apnea Can Be Managed

You may snore, or wake up your partner in the middle of the night because you stop breathing. You don’t have live with these symptoms. You can stand up to sleep apnea and say no more. Dr. Judy Strutz, a San Bernardino prosthodontist and sleep apnea dentist says, one of the first things patients say to her is that they didn’t know they could get help.

This procedure begins like other dental visits with Dr.Strutz, she’ll complete a comprehensive exam that evaluates whether you suffer from airway challenges and then will recommend a home sleep test. Once it is determined that you would benefit from a dental sleep apnea appliance, Dr. Strutz will determine what type of dental device is best for you. Now Dr.Strutz and her team can customize an appliance to fit your mouth and open up the airway. This will allow you to breathe in the air you need during the night, thus preventing you from waking up.

Sleep apnea can impact your ability to reach rem sleep. The longer you go without this level of sleep the more damage that it causes. You may fall asleep while driving, lose your job and reach a deep depression where you see no way out. Being overly tired can cause hallucinations and problems with focus and attention.

Don’t waste one more minute on sleep apnea, call Dr. Judy Strutz and her team today.
