The Damage Of Sugar To Your Teeth

We all know that large amounts of sugar are not healthy for the body, but did you also know that it can impact your teeth and the overall health of your smile? The sugar, unfortunately, produces acids that then affect the enamel. But you can protect your smile by taking these 3 action steps today:

Limit the amount of soda that you are consuming. Soda contains on average 39 grams of soda if you have been struggling to quit drinking one soda a day and supplement with water or other no-sugar drinks.

Avoid the candy aisle. While this can be very tempting when you are at the grocery store, avoid the sugary snacks and instead reach for nuts or fruits with natural sugar.

Chew sugar-free gum. Gum is a great way to increase saliva production, which is good for your teeth because it reduces plaque acid from your teeth and can reduce tooth decay.

Are Your Sensitive Teeth Getting In Your Way?

Sensitivity in teeth can be a real problem when you sit down and are trying to enjoy your bowl of ice cream or when you just want to enjoy that cup of hot tea. Are your sensitive teeth getting you down and causing you problems when you are out with friends? Here are 4 things you can do in order to decrease sensitivity.

1.     Don’t brush too hard. You may be brushing off enamel that is critical to protect the teeth. The enamel is the outer covering of your tooth and the thinner it becomes the more sensitive your teeth will be. When the tooth enamel is worn down, it causes nerve endings to be exposed that cause more problems.

2.     Avoid acidic foods. This also causes wearing on the tooth enamel and increases your risk of sensitivity.

3.     Avoid grinding your teeth. If you find that you are grinding your teeth, get a fitted mouth guard that can support your teeth so you are not grinding tooth on tooth impacting the tooth enamel.

4.     Take a break or avoid bleaching your teeth. While everyone wants a healthy, white smile, bleaching takes off a layer of enamel in order to remove the stains and show off the healthy white part. This can increase sensitivity over time. However, there may be other solutions that you can use in order to get the smile you are looking for.

Love Your Smile From The Inside Out

Did you know that the health of your body is contingent on the health of your smile? By loving and taking care of your dental health, it can help keep your liver, heart and other organs working to their full capacity. It can be easy to take shortcuts with your dental health, not realizing that overtime not brushing and flossing actually is a contributing factor of heart disease.

Eating and consuming healthy foods are a great way to fuel your smile and your body. The water from the fruit and vegetables can rinse carbohydrates and sugar from your tooth enamel in between brushing and they are essential for your healthy bodies.

Spend time looking over the food that you are consuming. If they are high carbohydrate foods plan ahead and either brush right after consuming them or avoid them altogether. While some carbohydrates are essential to fuel your brain, simple carbohydrates turn to high sugar foods.

While it can be easy in our day – to – day busyness to forget the importance of keeping our smile healthy, they can last a lifetime without major dental procedures when we make the health of our smile a top priority.
