Manuel or Electric Toothbrush?

While we have been reeling from the impact of COVID-19, and dental offices have not seen patients, your dental health must be still taken care of. But with all the information on dental health, what is the best system?

A manual toothbrush can provide a tried and true clean you need. However, the electric toothbrush depending on which; one you go with might provide a timer, superior plaque removal, and the ability to ensure your teeth are clean. While the research is still out on whether an electric or manual toothbrush is better, one thing is for sure, brushing is essential to ensure your smile is healthy.

No matter the toothbrush you go choose, you want to brush in gentle circles for at least 2 minutes. You want to avoid brushing too hard and be sure that the toothbrush head fits comfortably in your mouth.

While it can be difficult to reach the inside of your molars or the side closest to your cheek, not allowing plaque to build up in these hard to reach spots is imperative to having a healthy smile.

Are You Brushing Your Teeth Too Rigorous?

Are you brushing your teeth regularly? We sure hope so. However, if you are brushing vigorously or brushing for longer than 2 minutes you might be doing more harm than good. That may seem impossible but brushing too hard or brushing for longer than 2 minutes can cause your gums to recede.  While we certainly do not want you to stop brushing and taking care of your smile, it is critically important you are careful with your teeth and gums. Receding gums can then lead to bacteria building up and enamel can begin to wear away. Being careful about your teeth and protecting them is critical.

If you continue to brush too hard it can also cause cavities, a need for a root canal or even more expensive dental procedures. Taking care of your smile is your top priority and we want to be sure you have the tools to protect your smile. Always use a soft-bristled toothbrush, gently brush for 2 minutes and in gentle circles. These easy steps can ensure you have the smile you deserve for a lifetime.

Keep Your Tooth Brush In Great Shape!

Your toothbrush is specially designed with you in mind. The bristles are attached in such a way as to remove items from the surface of your teeth. Without the bristles, food would be able to build up. The longer carbohydrates and other foods stay on the surface of your teeth the more opportunity for decay to happen.

The toothbrush has been around since 3000 BC with just a little bit different design, and while your toothbrush is designed to help you out, it needs to sometimes be changed out. You might be guilty of holding on to your toothbrush for years, but that is not ideal.

The important job of your toothbrush is important and having a top-notch tool to get the job done is even more important. You might be asking yourself, how often should you change out your toothbrush? Or how do you know if your toothbrush is no longer doing the job that it should be doing?

It is recommended by The American Dental Association that you change out your toothbrush every 3 – 4 months. This ensures that the bristles are not worn down and that bacteria, has not built up. And during cold and flu season, if you find yourself ill, change that toothbrush, too.

Protect Your Toothbrush

Keeping your toothbrush dry and clean is essential to ensure it is capable of doing its job correctly. Do you know that your toothbrush is one of the most critical tools to keeping your body healthy? Without it so many things can go wrong, including dental decay, periodontal disease and other dental problems that are costly to repair. Here are 4 tips to keeping your toothbrush in great shape.

  1. Always keep it away from other hygiene products. If your toothbrush is touching other items in a drawer it is more likely to get bacteria or other germs on it that will stay in the bristles until the next time you brush.
  2. Keep it dry. Bacteria grows on the bristles when it is wet. This then can be transferred to your mouth as you are brushing.
  3. Change out your toothbrush every six months at least. It is no coincidence that dental appointments for cleanings are two times a year and during this time you get a new toothbrush. Feel free to use it, that is why your dentist gives it to you.
  4. Rinse any leftover toothpaste off of your toothbrush. Leftover toothbrush can have other bacteria and items stick to it. Keeping it clean will help prevent other bacteria being left behind when you brush.

Following these 4 tips will help you keep a healthy smile. For more information on healthy dental habits contact Dr. Judy Strutz and her team.
