Manuel or Electric Toothbrush?

While we have been reeling from the impact of COVID-19, and dental offices have not seen patients, your dental health must be still taken care of. But with all the information on dental health, what is the best system?

A manual toothbrush can provide a tried and true clean you need. However, the electric toothbrush depending on which; one you go with might provide a timer, superior plaque removal, and the ability to ensure your teeth are clean. While the research is still out on whether an electric or manual toothbrush is better, one thing is for sure, brushing is essential to ensure your smile is healthy.

No matter the toothbrush you go choose, you want to brush in gentle circles for at least 2 minutes. You want to avoid brushing too hard and be sure that the toothbrush head fits comfortably in your mouth.

While it can be difficult to reach the inside of your molars or the side closest to your cheek, not allowing plaque to build up in these hard to reach spots is imperative to having a healthy smile.

Are You Taking Care of Yourself?

With so much going on around you it can be easy to forget your needs. While you may be helping your children get to school work is done, ensuring that the house is clean and sterile and still doing your own job that pays the bills it can be easy to forget that you too need to be taken care of.
Here are 5 Tips for ensuring that you are staying healthy during this difficult time.
  1. Take time to breathe. Breathing is one of the most important things we can do to stop negative thoughts in their tracks. While most people think breathing is something we do naturally, most people breathe shallowly throughout their day. Taking nice deep breaths in and out can release tension, decrease your stress level, and help you get back to a place of calm.
  2. Brush and floss your teeth. Brush for 2 minutes. While you are ensuring that your smile is taken care of in these two minutes; this also gives you time to take a step back and get your mind back on track.
  3. Start your morning off right. Either by grabbing a piece of fruit, going for a quick walk, or taking in the quiet sounds around you. A few minutes in the morning can change your entire day.

Protect Your Health

No more than ever you must take care of your dental health. While we do not think of health being impacted by our smile or what is going on with our mouth, having a compromised immune system due to periodontal disease or other dental problems can make you vulnerable to other problems.

While washing your hands, brushing, flossing, drinking water and rinsing your teeth after consuming certain foods was always important. Did you know these things can help you fight against certain components of illnesses that are currently impacting people?

Rinsing your mouth with water after consuming food can ensure that bacteria does not build up on your teeth. If you have a cavity or a more serious dental problem, this can cause your body to go into fight mode, causing your immune system to have to move into overdrive. This can then cause long-term problems as well as creating a problem for your body if it needs to fight off other infections. If you think that you have an illness, please stay home, however, if you have a problem with your dental health taking care of the problem as soon as possible can ensure that you stay healthy through these difficult times.

Avoid Dental Emergencies

Nothing is worse than having a cracked or broken tooth interrupt your holiday plans. This year you can take care of problems ahead of time to decrease the risk of having problems when you want to be with family. Here are 5 tips to helping you stay out of the dentist's office with an emergency this Holiday Season.

  1. Get problems taken care of. If you have a tooth that is bothering you or is cracked or broken schedules your appointment now.
  2. Brush and floss regularly. This is a great way not only to keep your smile healthy but also to cut down on problems.
  3. Don’t use your teeth as tools. If you are opening packages or using your teeth as tools you run a higher risk of damaging the structure of your teeth.
  4. Don’t chew on ice. Cracked and broken teeth can happen when the enamel on your teeth is weakened. Chewing on ice can cause problems you don’t need.
  5. Use a mouthguard. If you and your family get together over the holidays and play a little ball, street hockey or football, protect your smile with a mouthguard.

Yoga and The Positive Impact On Your Smile

You have probably heard the positives for yoga and your overall health, but here is another important way that yoga can improve your dental health. Our body parts are interconnected and what problems we incur in one part of the body can impact another part. For example, when we hold stress in our upper bodies, neck or shoulders it can cause stress and tightness in the jaw which can lead to grinding your teeth.

Grinding your teeth has numerous negative consequences on the overall health of your smile including cracking, breaking or damaging your teeth as well as a potential for jaw pain that negatively impacts your ability to consume the foods you love.

But yoga can help all of that. Breathing deeply, while being on your mat can decrease your stress and help you to better handle life’s pressures.   Studies also show people who are stressed out are less likely to take care of their smile. They may worry more about day to day issues, and spend less time really taking care of their health. Doing yoga just a few times a week can improve your overall outlook on life and help keep your smile healthy for a lifetime.
