Oil
pulling is all the rage these days and with so much information out there, it
can be confusing. What is oil pulling? Should you oil pull? Which oil is best
if you are going to oil pull? How do you know if the procedure is working? Dr.Judy Strutz is here to answer some of the most common questions about oil
pulling.
Oil
pulling is the procedure of swishing, usually first thing in the morning, with
oil to remove food and other particles between your teeth. This procedure may
help to keep your gums free of periodontal disease and clean, particularly
between your teeth.
Oil
pulling should be done with organic oil. Coconut oil is the most common, but
sunflower oil will also work. You may want to spend time doing some research in
order to determine which oil is the best for you. You may also need to try a
few different types of oils prior to finding the one you like the most.
It
may take awhile before you notice the results of oil pulling, but ultimately your
gums should be a healthy pink, not puffy and they should not bleed when you
floss. Oil pulling may take a few weeks before you are really able to see the
positive benefits from this procedure.
Oil
pulling is typically done in the morning for 15 to 30 seconds. You can however,
oil pull in the late afternoon, evening or anytime of day. You’ll want to make
sure you do not want to swallow any of
the oil.
